“The tournament in Ohio was rough the first day because it rained for most of the day, which threw us off a bit,” said Bandt.

Following Bandt in team scoring, sophomore Chelsey Wyman finished tied for 38th place with NW Ohio’s Chelsea Crow and Wittenberg’s Miranda Pettit after posting a 177 (87-83).

The team competed in their second to last match of the year at the Hope Spring Invite #2 Tuesday. After shooting 376, Adrian finished fourth in the five-team event on the par 71 Wuskawhon Players Club Course.

St. Mary’s College (IN) would end the event in first place after shooting a team 324, while Olivet finished second, 21 strokes out of first play. Hope College finished third shooting 350, followed by Adrian in fourth with 376, while Calvin College brought up the rear in fifth place shooting 384.

Freshman Jylian Monahan would have the most success at the event, shooting 14 over par putting her in seventh place. After shooting 23 over par Sophomore Ariel Gruber finished second on the team, and in a three-way tie with Olivets Adrienne Jones and Hope’s Andrea Powell for 18th place.

Adrian’s third place finisher, Stockard found herself in a four-way tie for 22nd place with Hope’s Courtney Jenkins, Calvin’s Elise Doezema, and Olivet’s Jennifer Myers after finishing the day with a 97.

Wyman placed fourth on the team after shooting 100, tying for 27th place with Hope’s Maggie Mangan. Rounding out the day for the Bulldogs was Bandt shooting 102, putting her in 29th place.

While the team may not have had an ideal season, their record is not directly indicative of their play on the course. The team will have one more chance to prove themselves, as they head to Trine for a one day tournament on Friday.

“The fall and spring seasons have been great, the team is consistently making improvements and I feel that next year they will be better ,” said Stockard.

After regrouping during halftime, the second half brought on reinvigorated Carthage team that was able to slip six goals past Adrian. Their efforts would prove to be otiose however, as the Bulldogs matched the Red Men goal for goal in route to a 13-7 victory.

Next the team headed to Milwaukee, facing off against the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Sunday. Once again Adrian’s offense and defense came out firing on all cylinders, taking an 8-2 lead into halftime.

With the Carthage game still fresh in their minds, the Bulldogs continued to pound MSOE in the second half. After scoring nine more goals Adrian would go on to win the game 17-2.

Offensively, Adrian had four multi-goal scorers, with freshman attacker Mitch Burgin recording four, attackmen senior T.J. Cook and freshman Tyler Joseph each recording three, and freshman midfielder Douglas Boyd netting two. Lerg got the win in net after making nine saves and allowing two goals.

“We have been playing well together the past couple games and now we’re just trying to finish the season strong, so we can have everything clicking for the MLC tournament,” senior defenseman Zac Colvin said.

Wrapping up their week, the team once again hit the road to take on Trine University Wednesday. Adrian dominated the first quarter, scoring four goals to take a 4-0 lead into the second. Although the Bulldogs surrendered a goal in the second quarter, they answered right back with two goals of their own to take a 6-1 lead into halftime. Once again, Adrian came prepared to play the second half, allowing two goals while scoring four of their own on their way to defeating Trine 10-3.

Adrian’s offense was lead by Adamson, who recorded three goals, followed by Monroe and junior attacker John Hudzinski. Lerg made eight saves while leading his team to its 12th straight victory. Lerg has been a major factor in Adrian’s success this year, something his teammates are aware of.

“Lerg has been key for us, being nothing short of spectacular between the pipes,” said sophomore defenseman Lido Aldini.

The team will now have several days off before traveling to take on conference foe, Fontbonne Saturday. Fontbonne, currently 6-5, will be the teams final test in their quest for a perfect season in MLC league play.

Scoring for the Bulldogs was spread out around the field. Senior midfielder Amanda Lambert, senior midfielder Lindsey Day, and Hoyez all recorded an impressive four goals; junior attack Stacey Birlson, junior attack Olivia Duncan, and sophomore midfielder Hannah Early all knocked in an additional two goals each for the Bulldogs.

The Tigers started the scoring off with Molly Arnold at 28:01 left in the first half. Adrian made no hesitation to answer right back. Senior attack Rachel Johnston, Early, and Lambert retaliated each with a goal making the score 3-1.

As the first half approached the end, Adrian kept hold of their 7-5 lead. Day earned the Bulldogs an additional score with 16 seconds left in the half to cushion their lead to three.

“We started off a little rocky in the first half, but we had a momentum change during halftime. In the second half we figured out how to put shots in the back of the net, and play team defense, which resulted in a win,” said senior goalkeeper Laura Finfrock.

In the second half, Hoyez was quick to score the first goal assisted by Lambert, before Sewanee battled back and began their offensive push. The Tigers scored four unanswered goals in under five minutes tieing the score up at 9-9.

AC really buckled down and pushed through the rest of the game scoring 10 of the next 14 goals.

“We started the game off really slow on Saturday but really pulled it together throughout the rest of the game. We tried really hard to control the pace of the game. Our defense did a very good job of locking out their best attacker which in turn helped us control and win the game,” said Day

Finfrock started the game for the first half after recording six shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Jul Tehovnik substituted for Finfrock in the second half. Tehovnik was almost able to match Finfrock’s save count with five total saves.

The girls will have a week to get ready for their next game, as they will host Carthage on April 21 at 1:00 p.m. and Concordia on April 22, also at 1:00 p.m.

Three games remain in the ladies’ already impressive season before they hope to cater the MWLC tournament. The MWLC tournament will take place on May 4-5 in a location that is to be announced.

The Bulldogs came out strong in the first half, scoring four goals in the first eight minutes of the game. After Adrian seemed to let up a bit, the Tigers scored five of the next seven goals to pull the score within one at halftime.

“We came out a little flat and the game was close at half. Once we relaxed and played our game, things started going our way and we were able to come out as the successful team that we know we are,” said senior midfielder Amanda Lambert.

After regrouping during halftime the Bulldogs surrendered an early Wittenberg goal, tying the game four minutes into the second half. Undeterred, the Bulldogs regained the lead just 25 seconds later and would not look back. After scoring 12 of the next 18 goals, Adrian went on to beat Wittenberg 18-11.

Besides Duncan’s five goals, Adrian saw multi-goal production from four other players. Junior attack Stacey Birlson, senior attack Rachel Johnston, and Lambert each recorded three goals, while senior midfielder Lindsey Day had two. Senior attack Meghan Reynolds and junior midfielder Cassie Hoyez rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs, each notching one goal.

Adrian not only dominated on the scoreboard but also the stat sheet, where they lead in every statistical category. The Bulldogs had the advantage in shots 30-28, turnovers 12-15, draw controls 20-11, ground balls 37-26, and clears 13-12.

Another major contributor to the Bulldog’s success was the strong play of senior goalie Laura Finfrock, who made big saves when the team needed it.

“We started out really slow, but picked it up in the second half. Our goalie really kept us in the game,” said Day.

Finfrock got the win in net for the Bulldogs, recording 13 saves in the process. She is now 8-2 on the season, toting a .488 save percentage and a 9.53 goals against average.

Although they have been successful, the team knows they must continue to do the little things to make it deep into the post-season.

“We have to stay focused and not play so frantically. All of our success has come from our discipline and patience on the field. That is the key to our success,” said Lambert.

The team will have the rest of the week off before returning to action Sunday against Sewanee in a conference matchup. The game will we played at Sacred Heart Academy (Louisville) at 1:30 p.m.

The men’s tennis team is going through some rough times of late with injuries hindering the squad’s performance. This week the guys dropped a few conference matches, lowering the team’s overall record to 2-8 and 0-5 in conference play. Though their record may not reflect it best, the team’s confidence in themselves is high.

Our conference season has not gone the way we hoped but with a high number of returning players we look to use the rest of the season as a learning experience and build upon it for next year.”

This past week, Adrian faced off with Albion on April 5, Alma on April 7, and Trine on April 11, losing all three matches 9-0. Injuries that have really hit the team hard include key players freshman Ryan Delacey and junior Cameron Hamilton, both on the doubles team.

“Each match we are looking to improve and compete to the highest level possible. With the way the guys are playing currently, I look for us to finish on a high note as we close out the season,” said Albertsen.

Up against Albion, no real threat arose from the Bulldogs as they were overwhelmed in each match.

“We have been struggling a little bit right now, but it is mainly because we have a few injuries on the team from some key players. Besides the injuries, we have been playing well and we hope to get a couple more wins to finish the season,” said Hamilton.

The guys realize that their struggle is only temporary. Being a young team as they are right now is never an easy task to compete with the other schools.

“This is really a transition year for us. There are a few things Coach [Albertsen] expects for next year. One is some good recruiting and the second is hard work put in through the summer to make our next season a much better one,” said sophomore Tom Smendzuik.

Although AC could not catch a break against Albion, the doubles team was able to put up a great fight against Alma.

The only signs of life that the Bulldogs showed was in the efforts of the doubles teams. The doubles team, consisting of Hamilton and freshman Alex Hodren were able to go 8-5 in their match and doubles team sophomore Ron Hilliard and sophomore Drew Schultz were also able to get a final tally of 8-5.

The slump continued when the team traveled to Trine last night. The Bulldogs put forth great efforts, but in the end it was all in vain. Adrian lost to the Thunder 9-0. The loss to Thunder was the team’s sixth consecutive loss, and dropped the team’s overall record to 2-8 and conference record to 0-5.

The guys have a couple tough meets coming up soon including Capital on April 15 and Calvin, a conference opponent, on April 17. The Bulldogs seem optimistic in the next few meets that approach the end of their season. They hope for a couple wins to end the season with a bang and strive for a better start for next year.

With only three matches remaining before the end of the regular season the men’s tennis team knows how crucially important each match is. Now more than ever, they know preparation will be key to how their season ends. Practice over the summer and with hopes of recoveries of injured teammates, the future of this Bulldog tennis team is full of optimism.

The Adrian College men’s lacrosse team increased their win streak to nine games after wins over Aurora April 7 and Kenyon April 12. The two victories improved the team’s overall record to 10-1 and 5-0 in conference play.

The team started off their week by taking on Aurora College in a hard fought game. Initially, Adrian faltered out of the gates, allowing Aurora to get off to an early lead in the first quarter, resulting in 3-2 Aurora lead at the end of the first. Senior attackman T. J. Cook and junior midfielder John Hudzinski provided the Bulldogs offense.

The defensive struggle continued into the third quarter, with Aurora scoring the lone goal to take a 5-4 lead into the final period. The Bulldog’s fought back in the fourth quarter, scoring four of the final six goals to give Adrian the 8-7 win.
Hudzinski would end his night with two more goals, giving him four all together, while Cook and Kilcoyne each tallied a second goal. Sophomore goalie Kevin Lerg got the win in net for the Bulldogs, finishing the game with 10 saves.

After five days off from competition, the Bulldog’s faced Kenyon College in a non-conference match Wednesday night. Unlike the previous game the team came out ready to play, jumping out to a 4-0 lead at the end of the first. Kenyon scored two early goals to start the second, however Adrian answered with four unanswered goals, taking 8-2 into halftime.

“We did what we needed to do to keep our heads under control. We came out hot and put four goals in before they could even get one,” said Hudzinski.

Once again Adrian controlled the tempo of the game in the third quarter, notching two more goals while holding Kenyon to one. Each team scored one goal in the final period of play, giving Adrian the 11-4 victory.

The Bulldog’s offense saw production from five different players, with Kilcoyne, senior attack David Monroe, and junior midfielder Coady Adamson each recording three goals. Hudzinski and sophomore midfielder Tom Thielman rounded out the scoring for Adrian, each scoring one goal.

Faced with several man down situations, the defense turned in a strong effort while playing an important role in the Bulldog victory.

“From a defensive standpoint we played hard. We had a lot of shut downs during the man down, while only allowing four goals,” said junior defenseman Brandon MacDonald.

Lerg turned in another stellar performance in net for Adrian, making 10 saves in the win. He is now 10-1 this season, with 108 saves, .578 save percentage, and a 7.81 goals against average.

The team now has several days to regroup and prepare to faceoff against conference for Carthage April 14.

“It felt great to get another out of conference win, especially against a north coast team. We look forward to continuing our strong play this weekend against conference rival Carthage,” Cook said.

The Adrian College mens’ tennis team lost a pair of conference games over the weekend, dropping the teams record to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play. While the start to the season might not have been ideal, the team knows their record is not indicative of their level of play.

“We had a tough couple matches this past weekend. Though against Hope, both Ryan Delacey and I lost in third set tiebreakers, so it was really close,” said junior Cameron Hamilton.

The Bulldogs started their weekend off on Saturday with a 7-2 loss to Hope College in the team’s first conference match of the year. After a quick turnaround the team played their second conference game of the year Sunday, falling to Kalamazoo College 9-0.

Playing in the third singles spot, Adrian senior Alex Ziajor was defeated by Hope’s Cody Herbruck 6-1 and 6-1. Freshman Alex Holdren lost 6-1 and 6-1 to Hope’s Jonathan Panzer and sophomore Ron Hilliard fell to Hope’s Matthew Culver 6-0 and 6-0.

In keeping with the theme of the day, the doubles portion of the match would end similar to the singles matchups. In the first doubles match, Delacey and Hamilton would lose a hard fought match to Bussies and Culver 8-4. Competing in the second spot, Ziajor and Holdren would fall to Hope’s Kreps and Herbruck 8-2.

After a brief layover the Bulldogs traveled to Kalamazoo College Sunday, where the team would eventually fall to the 5-9 Hornets, 9-0.

During the singles matches, Delacey, Hamilton, Hilliard, and Ziajor would each lose to their Hope counterparts 6-1 and 6-0. In the remaining singles matches Holdren and sophomore Tom Smendzuik would meet the same fate as their teammates, with Holdren losing 6-0 and 6-0 and Smendzuik 6-0 and 6-2.

Smendzuik, who was playing in his first collegiate match, saw the loses as a unique learning experience.

“I personally played in my first collegiate match, but lost both of my matches certainly learning how far I have come as a tennis player and really where I need to be,” Smendzuik said.

In doubles, the Adrian pairing of Delacey and Hamilton would have the most success, as they lost to Nate Eddy and Mark Denenfeld 8-2. The remaining doubles match-ups would see Ziajor and Holdren fall to Hope’s Alex Dombos and Peter Rothstein 8-0, while the AC pairing of Hilliard and Smendzuik was defeated by Alan Faber and David DeSimone 8-1.

Even though the team has lost three straight matches, they know they can’t afford to dwell on the past. The team has six games remaining in the season, including three conference matches, each of which are crucial to their post-season hopes.

“We came out and played as best we could, but they were just good teams. It was an experience that I think has made us better,” said Delacey.
The team will be back in action on Thursday, as they travel to Albion College for a conference match.

Senior goalkeeper Laura Finfrock saw limited action during the game, recording two saves in the process. The victory, her sixth, improved her record to 6-2 between the pipes for the Bulldogs.

Throughout the game Adrian led Mt. St. Joseph in shots (26-8), clears (9-10 to 5-6), and tied 10-10 on draw controls. The win improved the team’s record to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in the Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference.

Sunday offered a much stiffer test for the Bulldogs, as Adrian and Lynchburg went back and forth, with Adrian ultimately coming out on top 16-12.

“We have to play a full game with no letdowns,” said Reynolds.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 5-0 lead just 4:31 into the game. Johnston paced the scoring in the remainder of the first half and finished the game with five goals and one assist. However, Lynchburg stormed back with seven unanswered goals to take a 7-5 lead into the half.

The Bulldogs seemed on the ropes until senior defenseman Katrina Rabishaw and junior midfielder Heather Newblom each scored goals to make it 8-7 at 22:23 of the second half. Reynolds and Duncan contributed the next two goals to make it 10-7. The teams traded goals until the very end, where the Bulldogs were content with running out the clock to secure the 16-12 win.

During the game Lynchburg outshot the Bulldogs (24-22) and lead in turnovers (13-17), while Adrian lead in groundballs (13-11) and faceoffs (18-11). Junior midfielder Cassie Hoyez recorded Adrian’s only penalty of the game, when she was assesed a yellow card at 9:37 of the second half. Finfrock was between the pipes once again for Adrian, finishing the game with 10 saves and allowing 12 goals.

Under the guidance of new head coach and mentor Rachel Cibulas, the Bulldogs have played passionate and smart lacrosse throughout the season, proving that they’re one of the top teams in college lacrosse.

Up next for the team is Wittenberg on April 7 at 4 p.m. in the Performance Stadium. Aware of the possible challenges the Tigers might present, the team knows they must continue to play ‘Bulldog’ lacrosse.

“We need to be able to capitalize on their mistakes,” added sophomore Laurel Van’t Hof.

The Adrian Bulldog lacrosse team played well this past week, improving their overall record to 8-1. The Bulldogs trampled the Hanover Panthers on March 30, and then shut out the Albion Britons on April 4 at the Performance Stadium. AC put up 11 goals while only surrendering four against the Panthers. The Bulldogs were able to post 12 goals against Albion without giving up a single score.

Our defense held up really well and we were able to put in both of our sophomore goalies in and get them some good time in.”

In the first quarter the Bulldogs showed no mercy and choked the Panthers to a score of 6-0. Freshman attack Mitch Burgin started the scoring off right away with a quick goal only a minute and a half into the game. From there, juniors attack John Hudzinski and midfielder Coady Adamson punched in two more goals each. To make a final addition in the first quarter, senior attack David Monroe also slung in a goal to make the score 6-0 in the quarter. The offense made it an easy night for sophomore goalie Kevin Lerg who was switched out after making only two saves at 17 minutes into the game. Sophomore goalie Matthew Neal replaced Lerg for the remainder of the game and only let up four goals throughout the game. Neal’s success in the net was partly due to the defense only allowing 19 shots in the game while the offense boasted 41 shots throughout. The offense also dominated in the faceoffs winning 14 out of the 18.

The second quarter got off to a much slower start, with Monroe scoreing Adrian’s lone goal. Hanover’s Luke Karnick immediately answered the Bulldog goal, making the score 7-1 heading into half-time. Stepping up, the defense on both sides, ensured that the scoring was kept to a minimum.

In the third quarter, the Bulldog’s offensive effort was spearheaded by sophomore attack Cody Kilcoyne, senior midfielder Scott Krystiniak and attack T.J. Cook, and freshman attack Brian Sullivan.

The fourth quarter went much like the third. The Bulldogs roped in two goals while giving up two goals to the Panthers. The Bulldogs’ scoring was led by Cook and Sullivan. Hanover’s Mitch Miller and Karnick split their two goals.

“A lot of seniors didn’t get to see playing time against the younger Hanover team that plays hard. I think their future is bright for them,” said head coach Donald LaSala. “As far as being picked first in the MLC, every game is of value. You never know, as long as we show up, I think we can beat anybody.”

As for Albion, Adrian ran the table on them, racking up a grand total of 12 goals. Leading scorers for the Bulldogs included Krystiniak, Adamson, freshman midfielder A.J. Smith, senior midfielder Mitch Barnard, Cook, Monroe, and Hudzinski. The Bulldogs had an energized first half, scoring all of their goals during it. AC lacrosse outshot the Brits at 40-12 and snatched 14 of the 16 faceoffs. Goalies Neal and Lerg split the time in the net. Neal racked up five saves while Lerg had three totaling up to eight.

“It’s always nice to get a conference win. We played strong in the first half but need to move the ball a little faster on offense in the second half. Shutouts are always good too. Aurora’s a good conference opponent, we’ll need sound performances from everyone on Saturday,” senior midfielder Scott Krystiniak said.

After a three day break from competition, the Bulldogs will once again hit the turf at the Performance Stadium, as they faceoff against Aurora College at 12 p.m. Saturday.

With a time of 49.64 seconds, Sellers, along with teammates freshman Jazmyne Curry, sophomore Kristen Langerman, and freshman Natalie Miller crushed the school record.

Finishing with many first and second places, the guys also put up a valiant effort in Marion. Junior Cyle Rogotzke, a general long distance runner, snatched first place with a dominating time of 33:14 in the 10,000 meter run.

“I felt that I ran very well and I plan to continue to improve over the course of the season. I also felt like everyone’s training over the summer showed in this meet but there is always room for improvement,” said Rogotzke.

In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, sophomore Eric Kilpatrick grasped first place with a time of 10:19. Aside from running events, long jumper Aaron Wielfaert recorded a first place with a distance of 6-07.

“Everyone competed very well for our first outdoor meet of the season, however it was only the first meet, so there is room for improvement,” said Sellers. “I am very excited for the women’s 4×1 this year. If we can take one second off of our time, we’re almost guaranteed a shot at going to Nationals in May. With everyone running as well as they did last week, the future for this season is shining bright. I encourage everyone to attend the home meet on April 7 to cheer on the entire track team.”

Overall the entire team put forth a massive effort with very impressive times. “Everyone participated to their potential and performed very well. Hopefully we can continue with these efforts through the rest of the season,” said Rogotzke.
