The women’s golf team puts up a valiant effort this week in the Bump Invitational, ninth place, and the No. 2 Hope Spring Invite, fourth place. The ladies plan to use the rest of the season as a learning experience.
The Adrian College women’s golf team has had a busy week, competing in the Laura Bump Invitational at Millcreek Golf Course in Ostrander, OH April 14-15 and the Hope Spring Invite #2 at The Wuskowhan Players club in West Olive, MI April 17.
The team would finish the Bump Invitational in ninth out of 15 after shooting an overall 724 (377, 347) on the par 72 Millcreek Course. Allegheny College would be the eventual winner of the event recording shooting a 663 (330, 333).
The first day of the tournament offered less than favorable conditions, however the Bulldogs were able to push through it.
“The first day we had freezing rain with wind and the second day, there were very high winds but both went well for the conditions,” said Senior Leanna Stockard.
Freshman Hayley Bandt led the team in the event after recording a 170 (87, 83); also finishing in a tie for 22nd place with Wittenberg’s Anna Busam, Franklin’s Brittany Brownrigg, and Hiram’s Kristine Khowcharoen.
“The tournament in Ohio was rough the first day because it rained for most of the day, which threw us off a bit,” said Bandt.
Following Bandt in team scoring, sophomore Chelsey Wyman finished tied for 38th place with NW Ohio’s Chelsea Crow and Wittenberg’s Miranda Pettit after posting a 177 (87-83).
The team competed in their second to last match of the year at the Hope Spring Invite #2 Tuesday. After shooting 376, Adrian finished fourth in the five-team event on the par 71 Wuskawhon Players Club Course.
St. Mary’s College (IN) would end the event in first place after shooting a team 324, while Olivet finished second, 21 strokes out of first play. Hope College finished third shooting 350, followed by Adrian in fourth with 376, while Calvin College brought up the rear in fifth place shooting 384.
Freshman Jylian Monahan would have the most success at the event, shooting 14 over par putting her in seventh place. After shooting 23 over par Sophomore Ariel Gruber finished second on the team, and in a three-way tie with Olivets Adrienne Jones and Hope’s Andrea Powell for 18th place.
Adrian’s third place finisher, Stockard found herself in a four-way tie for 22nd place with Hope’s Courtney Jenkins, Calvin’s Elise Doezema, and Olivet’s Jennifer Myers after finishing the day with a 97.
Wyman placed fourth on the team after shooting 100, tying for 27th place with Hope’s Maggie Mangan. Rounding out the day for the Bulldogs was Bandt shooting 102, putting her in 29th place.
While the team may not have had an ideal season, their record is not directly indicative of their play on the course. The team will have one more chance to prove themselves, as they head to Trine for a one day tournament on Friday.
“The fall and spring seasons have been great, the team is consistently making improvements and I feel that next year they will be better ,” said Stockard.
