The Student Government Association (SGA) held its annual informal presidential debate Monday night. The students involved in the event were the two presidential candidates, juniors Kourtney Price and Caitlin Lake, as well as vice presidential candidates, sophomores Mike Fisher and Zack Ritchie. The first order of business was to establish each candidate’s qualifications for their desired position. Price’s qualifications included his term as SGA president and his is involvement in the executive board of Tau Kappa Epsilon, which is a new fraternity on campus that Price helped to found. Lake’s includes her openness to people and having good time management skills as well as the ability to prioritize. Ritchie has worked in student government for much of his life and has worked with numerous people and planned many events. Fisher claims to have very good communication skills. Secondly, the candidates were asked to define the Student Government Association in their own words. Ritchie defined it as being “a body of students elected to represent the students.” Price defined it as being “the heart and soul of the student body,” Fisher defined it as the “communication between students and the administration” and Lake stated that she would like to “bring SGA to its full potential.” Eventually, the floor was open to students in attendance at the debate to ask questions of the candidates. Some of the question topics were Greek Life, the new mascot and campus dining. The formal SGA debate will be held Monday, March 29 at 8 p.m.
