“Uno Mas! Uno Mas! Uno Mas!,” was the chant that swept through Caine Student Center on Saturday night at Inter Fraternity Council (IFC) Men’s Runouts.
At 7:30 p.m., the main floor of Caine was consumed by members of the five fraternities on Adrian College’s campus – Alpha Tau Omega (ATO), Theta Chi, Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE), Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) and Phi Kappa Sigma.
Students lined the rest of the Caine, cheering as the event got underway. To kick things off, the fraternities had a dance off. The judges were Laura Owen, Greek life coordinator, and a member from each of the sororities on campus. Jen Lightner was the representative from Chi Omega, Annette Camarati from Alpha Phi, Katie Squares from Alpha Sigma Alpha and Katie VanAndersal form Delta Nu Kappa.
After the first round of dances, the judges selected the top two fraternities, Theta Chi and TKE, who then had a dance-off for first place. By a narrow margin, the winner was Tau Kappa Epsilon. Their most memorable performance was a dance to the song “Crank Dat” by Soulja Boy, where members wore a variety of costumes, such as a skunk costume and a Superman costume. Theta Chi was close behind TKE in second place.
“Men lie, women lie, numbers don’t. First place,” George Ryan Holton, vice president of TKE said.
Although all of the dances were highly-entertaining and generated a lot of energy from the crowd, the Storm Trooper, Darth Maul, Superman and the skunk costumes were crowd favorites. Holton said the costumes were donated by his aunt who used to own a costume shop.
“I think all the dances were really good and very entertaining,” Chi Omega member Sarah Sokolowski said. “It was nice to see that some of the fraternities were supporting TKE to get the eight members they needed to get their charter.”
Music selection for the dances ranged from ATO’s choice of various songs from “The Lion King” to Theta Chi’s choice of “Tik Tok” by Keisa.
The cheer “Uno Mas!” was started by the brothers of the Theta Chi fraternity, as it appeared to the spectators. They cheered on the eight men who accepted bids to join Tau Kappa Epsilon. According to Holton, TKE needs 35 members in order to be eligible for a charter, which they’re hoping to get by March. Even though eight men accepted their bids, they must be initiated for TKE to receive their charter.
After the dance competition, pledges stepped up to a microphone and revealed their choices. One after another, they announced their name, year and the name of fraternity they had chosen. One by one, each of the fraternities ran up and swept the pledges away in celebration. By the end of the night, ATO had six students accept bids to join, Phi Kappa Sigma had three, SAE had one, Theta Chi had six and Tau Kappa Epsilon had eight. In total, 24 students accepted bids to join one of the six fraternities.
